Human kind and nature can co-exist forever, however they will never flourish if a big change doesn’t occur. As we saw in the video “Man”, humans have stripped this planet of all of its substances to benefit themselves. From animals, to diamonds to trees, the planet is now so polluted and contaminated that human contact with nature is visible almost completely around the globe. Our glaciers are melting, our atmosphere is breaking open, our trees are disappearing, we are creating mountains of waste, our oceans are full of garbage, animals are dying because of this garbage. There are so many examples that explain the current relationship between human kind and nature, and they all lead to the conclusion that if we keep going at this pace, we will not have a safe and healthy planet for our kids.
The problem with what is happening is that people are not grasping the gravity of the situation. They believe that after all goes down, somehow we will have a second chance, a second opportunity; unfortunately this is not the case. We only have one shot at this, and through only a couple of decades we have managed to make our only planet vulnerable to so many realities (listed above). If within this decade the people don’t realize what’s to come, we will worsen our conditions exponentially. It we keep going at this rate of deterioration, there will be no going back. Based on these observations, right now, to no degree can humans and nature coexist and flourish, All they can do right now is prevent further damage and try to take back some of the horrid consequences already in place.
There are many issues preventing us from viable solutions that will actually take place. The first and most important one is that a big portion of the global population isn’t educated on these prevalent environmental issues and don’t know what is going on. Some of these concepts, such as climate change, air pollution and waste are hard to wrap your head around. Another reason we aren’t getting anything done is simply that people have other things to worry about, they simply don’t care. Since people are not seeing immediate consequences to these problems in their daily lives, they disregard these matters and worry about their lives on a day-to-day basis. They don’t wake up and think about how they are going to recycle, as does the majority of the world. Personally I do little to nothing for climate change because of all the reasons I just stated above. Besides garbage in the streets, I come in contact with few to none of the big environmental issues, causing me to forget them. Here in the Dominican Republic, there is no “Go Green” attitude towards daily life, which makes it even harder.
For me to be motivated to make a change on a constant basis, I need to see the problem myself. If I am not in frequent contact with it, I will often forget it and only act upon it a few times. My generation, and kids my age, are fully aware of the earth we live in and know that our kids will not have the luck to live in the world we live in now, if we don’t do something about it. If humans thought about the harm they are provoking nature, and think about how they can be better, only then MAYBE, can humans and nature have a chance of coexisting and slowly flourishing together.
